I am going to paint a perfect picture, A land of harmony, where Google, Apple, and Microsoft have all made friends and decide to play nice. Allowing the consumer to pick and choose which bits of which company they use. With software it is very easy to lock people in. All companies have been a little guilty of this. It is obviously a lot more work to allow your software to play nicely with your competitors. This is one huge often understated advantage with open source software, but that is another subject.
The perfect picture might not be far away, shapes and colours are starting to appear on the canvas. It looks like google have made a first step. Especially now with the recent formation of the Google Data Liberation Front (they have T-Shirts and everything). Amazingly I have just made Apple, Google and Microsoft play nicely together.
To cut to the chase. I have just managed to sync my iphone to my google apps account using google sync, which syncs your google apps data, calendars, contacts and email through Microsoft Exchange! What's even more impressive is that the service works! AND it is completely free!
I'm gob smacked well done kids. Play nice.
-- small update --
Moments after writing this, I came across this article. Essentially Apple seem to be getting upset that Google keep launching great apps, already core iPhone contains: Google maps, You tube, Search, Mail. Not to mention the fact that I just used a free app from google that replaced the core features of Apple mobile me.
